چکیده

Surface creases provide us with important information about the shapes of objects and can be intuitively defined as curves on a surface along which the surface bends sharply. Our mathematical description of such surface creases is based on study of extrema of the principal curvatures along their curvature lines. On a smooth generic surface we define ridges to be the local positive maxima of the maximal principal curvature along its associated curvature line and ravines to be the local negative minima of the minimal principal curvature along its associated curvature line. The ridges and ravines are important for shape analysis and possess remarkable mathematical properties. For example, they correspond to the end points of shape skeletons. In this paper we derive formulas to detect the ridges and ravines on a surface given in implicit form. We also propose an algorithm of obtaining piecewise linear approximation of ridges and ravines as intersection curves of two implicit surfaces.

Nonlinear Diffusion of Normals for Stable Detection of Ridges and Ravines on Range Images and Polygonal Models

The main contribution of this work consists of developing a new surface smoothing method. The method preserves sharp variation points of the surface normals and is good for stable extraction of perceptually salient ridges and ravines. The method is based on a discrete nonlinear diffusion process (iterative nonlinear averaging) applied to the surface normals. We demonstrate applicability of the ...

A Skeleton-based Approach for Detection of Perceptually Salient Features on Polygonal Surfaces

The paper presents a skeleton-based approach for robust detection of perceptually salient shape features. Given a shape approximated by a polygonal surface, its skeleton is extracted using a three-dimensional Voronoi diagram technique proposed recently by Amenta et al. 3. Shape creases, ridges and ravines, are detected as curves corresponding to skeletal edges. Salient shape regions are extract...

A 3D Voronoi-Based Skeleton and Associated Surface Features

The paper proposes an approach for stable extraction of the skeleton of a polygonal surface and detection of surface features, ridges and ravines, corresponding to skeletal edges. The approach adapts the three-dimensional Voronoi diagram technique [3] for skeleton extraction, explores the singularity theory for ridge and ravine detection [8], and combines several filtering methods for skeleton ...

Detection of ridges and ravines using fuzzy logic operations

In object analysis, line and curve finding plays a universal role, and it can be accomplished by detecting ridges and ravines in digital gray scale images. In this paper, we present a new method of detecting ridges and ravines by using local min and max operations. This method uses erosion and dilation properties of fuzzy logic operations and requires no information of ridge or ravine direction...

The Effect of Ridges to Improve Ductility and Reduce Deformation Energy in Deep-Drawing Process

In this research, two new methods that improve the drawing depth of deep-drawing processes have been introduced. In the first technique, by creating ridges on the punch surface, the stress concentration is decreased on the blank near the punch edge, in turn increasing the drawing depth. The second method is based on the principle of reducing resistant force in the flange area between the die, t...
